Bemis Grundy was walking east on Lebanon Pike on the side of the right travel lane when he was struck by an eastbound 2005 Toyota Solara being driven by Patricia Turklay, 32, of Nashville on September 23, 2017. There is little to no shoulder on that portion of roadway but there is a bus stop in this area. Turklay said she did not see Grundy until just before hitting him. She unsuccessfully swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid impact. Grundy died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Bemis worked at The Turnip Truck Natural Market from 2006-2015. From their website:
We are sad to announce that our dear friend Bemis Grundy has passed away. Bemis worked at The Turnip Truck from 2006 to 2015.
He was a ray of light and brought joy to everyone he encountered. He was a loyal friend to most and more like a brother to many. His smile, laugh, and determination will be missed.
Rest well our dear friend, you are so loved.
