Brian Keith Reed of Antioch, TN, was fatally injured at 6:25 a.m. on I-65 under the Fern Avenue overpass. He was 34 years old.
The investigation showed he was involved in a single-vehicle crash at the I-65 South/I-24 West split. He began walking north on the I-65 South shoulder and was underneath the Fern Avenue overpass (where the shoulder is approximately 24-inches wide) when he was struck by a Nissan Frontier pickup truck that was traveling in the far right lane. The Frontier was struck from behind by a Nissan Xterra SUV either just before or just after it made contact Reed. The driver of the Xterra was preparing to change lanes from the far right lane to the left lane when the Frontier began to brake. The driver of the Xterra said she was unable to avoid colliding with the Frontier, causing the Frontier to collide with a concrete wall and possibly the pedestrian.
Reed was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Frontier, Salvador Austria, 48, of Gallatin, and his two passengers were taken to Skyline Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Austria was charged with driving without a license and failure to provide proof of insurance. The driver of the Xterra, Magalys Alfonso, 21, of Nashville, was not injured.
There was no indication at the scene of alcohol or drug involvement in this fatal crash. The investigation is continuing.
