Charles E. Barber Jr’s story

DOD: July 16, 2019

An unidentified pedestrian, later identified as Charles E. Barber Jr, 61, was struck and killed July 16th, 2019 at 10:20 a.m. at 13th Avenue South near Broadway.   The preliminary investigation shows that Barber was attempting to walk in between vehicles that were stopped on 13th Avenue South for the red light. When the light turned green, a 1998 Kenworth dump truck, driven by Stanley Dickerson, 71, began to move forward, striking the Barber who died at the scene. Dickerson was not injured.  Dickerson, of Madison, reported that he did not see the pedestrian prior to the collision. A witness who was with the pedestrian told investigators that the man, known only to him as “Chuck”, was impaired at the time of the crash. Barber was homeless. Toxicology testing will be conducted on the pedestrian to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in this fatal crash.
