Courtney Barnes' Story

DOD: July 9, 2018

Police have arrested the driver accused of hitting and killing a bicyclist, Courtney Barnes, 24, in north Nashville early Monday, July 9, 2018.  Barnes' boyfriend, Derrick McKinney, told police that Barnes was crossing the street to go to a convenience store

According to police officers, the Courtney was walking across Clarksville Pike outside of a crosswalk when she was struck near Buena Vista Pike.  She was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center but later died from her injuries.

The accused driver, 62-year-old Mary Celestine, worked on the food services team at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was also arrested.  Police said a colleague of Celestine's noticed the front-end damage on Celestine's car and notified police.  Investigators interviewed Celestine, who reportedly implicated herself in the fatal crash. She is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death, failure to render aid and failure to file an accident report. Police said Celestine showed no evidence of using drugs or alcohol.
