Per a metro press release, Ronnie William “Billy” Taylor, 45, was charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication and leaving the scene of an accident involving death in connection with July 30, 2017 8:45 p.m. fatal hit & run collision on Elm Hill Pike that claimed the life of pedestrian Huzefa Bakie, 40, of India. Bakie and two co-workers had traveled to the United States to attend a training program sponsored by their employer. They were staying at an Elm Hill Pike motel and were walking westbound on the edge of Elm Hill Pike en route to a Donelson Pike restaurant Sunday, July 30, 2017, when Bakie was struck by a 1997 red Ford pickup truck. He died at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck fled. Later in the evening, while the scene investigation was still taking place, Taylor went to the South Precinct and surrendered to officers. During an interview, Taylor said he thought he had hit a construction barrel on Elm Hill Pike, but that when he arrived at his McCrory Creek Road apartment, it was clear he had struck a person. Taylor showed signs of impairment, and acknowledged regularly smoking marijuana. A sample of his blood will be analyzed for drug content. Taylor was held in lieu of $107,000 bond.
